The list of outdoor activities is nearly endless. You’ll be hiking one day, fishing the next, maybe taking your first sailing or kayak lesson right here in our harbor. Summer festivals, events and classes connect our history and culture with you, your friends and family. This is the season when childhood memories spent close to the outdoors rise to the surface. It’s a very good time. FallThe palette of fall color begins mid-September with a bold flourish, the maples. Hike or drive inland from Lake Superior’s shore for waves of brilliant color in every direction. Along the shore, the birch, aspen and poplar are next to command attention. Their shades of rich gold and yellow grace October well into the third week. Driving tours, hikes and bike rides all offer you different options for distance, terrain and vantage points. Don’t forget your camera. WinterThis is the underrated season in Grand Marais. It could end up as your favorite. Take in azure sky, brilliant sun, white snow along the rocky harbor, sparkling waves beyond the lighthouse. Sunrises and sunsets over the lake are stunners. Crisp air and pristine snow beckon you to cross-country ski, snowshoe and snowmobile, and it all starts at your doorstep. Add dogsledding or skijoring to your list of new winter adventures! If you snowmobile, you’ll love our trails – the winter beauty is unmatched. Maybe the best part, after you’ve spent the day on our trails, is the sturdy cuisine that awaits you in town.
