Winter melts away…and with spring showers, the dramatic trio of rock, water and sky form movement. Thunderous waterfalls, cascading rivers, cleansing rain. You’ll smell the renewing forest even before spotting the early wildflowers and returning birds. Time to hike! Or, perhaps you’ll try your luck fishing a stream, kayaking, photographing an otter, biking along the shore. It's the season to reconnect with the rhythms of nature.
The pace in Grand Marais quickens a bit. The new warmth in the air renews festivals, inspires new menus and new art. Enjoy the natural charisma of this timeless harbor village in the ways that suit you best.
This is the “un” season - uncomplicated, untroubled, unconcerned with high style. Time to relax by the harbor and toss stones into the lake. Take a stroll to visit our quaint shops, inspired art galleries and historical sites. Summering in Grand Marais is high tea on Chez Jude’s front porch, beverages atop the Gun Flint Tavern, an après-breakfast treat at World’s Best Donuts.
Summer festivals, events and classes connect our history and culture with you, your friends and family. This is the season when childhood memories spent close to the outdoors rise to the surface. It’s a very good time.
The palette of fall color begins mid-September with a bold flourish, the maples. Hike or drive inland from Lake Superior’s shore for waves of brilliant color in every direction. Along the shore, the birch, aspen and poplar are next to command attention. Their shades of rich gold and yellow grace October well into the third week. Driving tours, hikes and bike rides all offer you different options for distance, terrain and vantage points. Don’t forget your camera.
The underrated season in Grand Marais. It could end up as your favorite. Take in azure sky, brilliant sun, white snow along the rocky harbor, sparkling waves beyond the lighthouse. Sunrises and sunsets over the lake are stunners. Crisp air and pristine snow beckon you to downhill or cross-country ski, snowshoe and snowmobile, and it all starts at your doorstep. Add dogsledding or skijoring to your list of new winter adventures! If you snowmobile, you’ll love our trails – the winter beauty is unmatched. Maybe the best part, after you’ve spent the day on our trails, is the sturdy cuisine that awaits you in town. Go ahead – you’ve earned it.
